Reconciliation SA Condemns Continuing Racism in AFL

Reconciliation SA unequivocally condemns the racist abuse recently directed at Port Adelaide’s Willie Rioli, a proud athlete and 2018 AFL premiership player with the West Coast Eagles.

The vile comments Rioli has faced, both online and in public, are a stark reminder that racism remains a persistent and damaging issue in Australian sport.

No athlete should have to endure such hatred simply for playing the game they love. Rioli’s experience is, unfortunately, not an isolated case. Racism continues to affect athletes across all sporting codes, undermining the values of fairness, respect, and unity that sport is meant to represent.

At Reconciliation SA, we are committed to driving real change. Our anti-racism in sports programs, developed in partnership with Sport SA, empower athletes, coaches, and administrators to identify, challenge, and prevent racism within their clubs and communities.

Through education and open dialogue, we strive to create safer, more inclusive sporting environments for all.

Together, let’s ensure that every player regardless of background can compete free from discrimination, and that the true spirit of sport reflects respect and equality for everyone.
