January 26 - A Day of Mourning

As we approach January 26th, we recognise the conflict and often painful emotions that this date evokes for many Australians. Known as Australia Day to some, and Invasion Day or Survival Day to others, this date holds different meanings and memories, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We have created a resource available below to support you and for you to share with others to deepen understanding.

For many, January 26th is a day that marks the beginning of a history of colonisation, dispossession, and trauma. It is a day that symbolises the loss of culture, land, and lives. It is crucial that we acknowledge and respect these experiences and the ongoing impact of racism and historical injustices.

Racism remains a pervasive issue in our society, affecting the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in profound ways. It manifests in systemic inequalities, social exclusion, and daily acts of discrimination. We need your support to continue to lead the conversations around racism, continue to learn, educate others, and actively work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

In addition to the challenges of racism and trauma, misinformation around the history and significance of January 26th can further complicate our understanding and discussions. It is essential to approach these conversations with empathy, openness, and a commitment to seeking the truth. By engaging with accurate historical accounts and listening to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, we can better understand the complexities of this date and its impact.

At Reconciliation SA, we are dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of our shared history and promoting reconciliation through education and dialogue. We encourage all our members to reflect on the significance of January 26th, engage in respectful conversations, and support initiatives that acknowledge the experiences and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

There are events being held on January 26th you may wish to participate in and show support.

Thank you for your continued commitment to reconciliation and for standing with us in addressing racism, trauma, and misinformation.
