Every year on the third Thursday in March, is Close the Gap Day; a national day of action dedicated to achieving health equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Led by the Close the Gap Campaign, the day is a powerful reminder that good health is a fundamental human right and that significant inequities in life expectancy, access to care, and overall wellbeing still exist between First Nations peoples and other Australians.
Since its launch in 2007, the campaign has called on governments, organisations and everyday Australians to commit to measurable action to close these gaps. While there has been progress in some areas under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, many targets remain off track, with some trending backward. Close the Gap Day is therefore not just symbolic; it is a collective call for accountability, sustained effort, and community-led solutions that place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices at the centre.
Here in Adelaide, the national message is brought to life through the vibrant Closing the Gap Day event held at the Adelaide Showground. Hosted this year for the first time by Nunkuwarrin Yunti, this free, family-friendly gathering on Kaurna Yarta creates a welcoming space for community connection, culture, and practical support. The day features a Welcome to Country, live entertainment, activities for children and families, community stalls, and access to a wide range of health and support services. It is a celebration of strength and resilience and provides tangible pathways to improve health and well-being outcomes.
Events like this matter because they move the conversation beyond statistics. They connect people directly with culturally safe services, strengthen relationships across the community, and create opportunities to listen, learn and stand together. They remind us that closing the gap is not the responsibility of First Nations peoples alone, it is a shared national responsibility.
This year, Reconciliation SA will have a stall at the Adelaide event, and we would love you to come and say hi. Drop by to connect with us, learn more about our work, and be part of the ongoing journey toward justice, equity and reconciliation. Close the Gap Day is about action, solidarity and hope, and every conversation helps move us closer to a fairer future for all.
