Kyam Maher spoke at the 2025 NRW Breakfast. His words reflected on South Australia, long been recognised as a leader in Aboriginal rights and reconciliation. While there is a long way to go, Maher pointed out that South Australia's legacy is one to be proud of.

Yet, the journey has not been without pain. The recent referendum was deeply felt by many, not only because it failed, but because of the manner in which it failed. What should have been a moment for unity and bipartisan leadership instead exposed divisions.

There have been calls by political leaders to reopen Uluru to climbers, contrary to the wishes of its traditional owners, and moves by some local councils to scrap Acknowledgments of Country. Even the legitimacy of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and the significance of Welcome to Country ceremonies have come under attack.

Despite these setbacks, hope has not faded.

Looking ahead, South Australia remains steadfast in its commitment to furthering First Nations rights. Treaty discussions and truth-telling processes are underway, and these initiatives signal genuine optimism for reconciliation.
