Wirra Distribution, Australia’s first 100% First Nations-owned film distribution company, and maybe the first in general, has celebrated a major milestone with its first-ever live event. The South Australian premiere of the acclaimed feature film SATU: Year of the Rabbit.
The screening will take place at the historic Odeon Star Cinemas in Semaphore, marking not only the debut of a remarkable film but also a defining moment for Wirra’s growing presence in the national film landscape. This location also aligns the film with its recent selection in the Port Adelaide Diversity & Inclusion Film Festival.Founded by Wongutha filmmaker Travis Akbar, formerly of Reconciliation SA, Wirra Distribution was created to challenge traditional industry models and provide a culturally safe, values-driven platform for storytellers from First Nations and other underrepresented communities. Its goal is simple yet powerful: to ensure authentic stories reach audiences through ethical, community-focused distribution. As Akbar has said, Wirra is “about integrity, trust and community”, principles that underpin everything the company does.
The premiere of SATU: Year of the Rabbit perfectly encapsulated that goal. Set in post-war Laos, the film follows a young orphan and a photojournalist on a journey of resilience and rediscovery. Its poetic imagery and emotional depth resonated strongly with the audience, offering a cinematic experience that blends humanity with cultural reflection.
The event also demonstrated Wirra’s commitment to community engagement. Beyond screening films, Wirra aims to create shared spaces for dialogue, connecting filmmakers, audiences and communities through storytelling that heals, inspires and educates.
For many attendees, the evening was a glimpse into the kind of future Wirra is building: one where film distribution becomes a form of cultural exchange and empowerment, not just commerce.
Looking ahead, Wirra Distribution plans to continue expanding its slate of films and events across Australia and Aotearoa, championing stories that reflect truth, identity and connection.
By hosting its first live event, Wirra has shown that it’s not only here to distribute films, it’s here to change the landscape of how they’re shared and celebrated.
